南アフリカのビッグスリーのうちの1つ「ハミルトン・ラッセル」
4/27/05 This is a terrific follow up to the knock out 2003 vintage for this wine.
This is more open-knit and not quite as tight at this stage in its life as the previous vintage.
This seems to possess a bit more flesh out the gate that is countered by a firm vein of acidity
on the finish that keeps this bright and lively.
The nose offers up toast, grilled nuts, lees and mineral notes over white tree fruits and citrus fruit.
The palate is medium bodied with good flavor intensity, showcasing stony,
mineral tinged quince and pear fruit, quite vibrant and clean with good acidity,
finishing with a subtle nut nuance that should become more pronounced with a few more years of bottle age.
Although drinking well now it should develop quit nicely over the next 2-3 years
and drink well for a couple of years after that.
Another solid effort on this one with its excellent expression of terroir influenced fruit.

4/27/05 There’s a lot going here. For those who think that South Africa is too hot to be able to make world class Pinot Noir the folks at Hamilton Russell seem to have a pretty good handle on dealing with this most fickle of grapes. This is a beautiful rendition of the varietal. As a vintage 2003 was highly touted as having the potential of making some pretty stellar wines. This is an outstanding statement of how good the vintage was and just how much Hamilton Russell has wrapped itself around making world class wines, both with their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. This 2003 Pinot Noir is a real beauty. The nose gives full expression to the varietal while the palate follows through with that sleek, seductive, silky mouth feel that everyone looks for with just the right combo of earthy funk and fruit. The nose brings forth notes of black cherry, spice, earth and truffle. The palate is medium weight with a silky texture and flavors of red berries, dark cherry, earth, truffle and a cocoa, bi
tter chocolate note on the finish. Very refined this plays a fine balance between Old World nuance and New World exuberance. Very impressive effort on this.
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar 3-4/05 91 pts $35) Moderately saturated medium red. Burgundian aromas of black cherry, pepper, tar, minerals and fresh herbs. Very suave on entry, then complex and lively in the middle palate, with ineffable flavors of berries, spices, cocoa powder, minerals and earthy underbrush. Dense and lively, without an ounce of extra fat. Builds impressively toward the end, finishing with very sweet, refined tannins. (The highly promising 2004 from barrel showed captivating raspberry and rose petal aromas and flavors, and lovely inner-mouth perfume.) Pinot noir in South Africa does not get better than this.
