弱冠二十そこそこのゲーリー・ニューマンはチューブウェイ・アーミーを引き連れてエレクトロ・ミュージックの伝道士としてこの世に降りてきたアンドロイド君です。電気と機械を崇拝するオタッキーでもあります。ビートルズ以降はじめて三つのアルバムをトップ１０入りさせた実績も持っている本当は偉い人です。しかし、アルバムの数が多すぎてゲーリー・ニューマン一筋のマニアは大変です。現在も精力的に活動中です。Dramatisはゲーリー・ニューマンがライヴをやめたため始めたゲーリー抜きのゲーリー・ニューマン・バンドです。Rocket RecordsとBeggars Banquetからシングルがリリースされています。Big Noise UKも元ゲーリー・ニューマンのサポート・メンバーのユニットらしいですが、Dramatisとの関係はわかりません。

＜アルゼンチンのJorge Arturi氏＞『Outland』におけるカジャグーグーのNick Beggsのステック（ドラム？）、『Music for Chamaleons』におけるOino Palladinoのベース、『Dance』の「She's got Claws」でのジャパンのMick Karn等の多くのスター達が彼とレコーディングをしました。マリリン・マンソンはニューマンのヒット曲「Down In The Park」をカヴァーし、ゲーリー・ニューマンを招いてライヴで演奏しました。

＜Numaniaの荒特派員＞（ディスコグラフィーに掲載した各アルバム・ヴィデオのコメントも見て下さい。しかし、よく集めましたね～。ため息が出ます。by Buggle）世のテクノポップ好きの人の中でも、あまり好かれてないんじゃないか、と思われるゲイリー様ですが、僕は'90年頃からハマってしまい、今でもしょーもないベスト盤以外なら、見つけ次第買うようになってます。本国イギリスでは近年トリビュート盤が制作されたり、色んなテレビ番組に出たり、色々ゲスト参加の声がかかったりと、ゲイリー・リバイバル・ブームになってるようです。「HUNTING VENUS」というドラマにもチョイ役で出てたりしてました。トイレでオシッコしてました。笑った。こないだ、ゲイリーの公式ページから、色々買ったんです。ビデオ、ツアーパンフ、そして伝記本「PRAYING TO THE ALIENS」。今は辞書を片手に一日2ページ程度ずつ読んでますが、写真見てるだけでも楽しい。やっぱり、あの顔がいいんですよ。驚いたのは、べック、マリリン・マンソンとのスリー・ショット写真。あと、ファンクラブ用の「1998 YEARBOOK」というのがあるんですけど、これには最近の結婚式の写真が・・・。おどけるゲイリーづらに、ああ、イメージが・・・。しかし奥さんの化粧がケバイ。どうも40歳前後にして初婚だったようですね、ゲイリーは。私生活でも「ME! I DISCONNECT FROM YOU」だったんですねぇ。新作もレコーディング中だそうですが、大幅に遅れてて（本当は'99年2月発売の予定だった）、所属しているEagle Recordsにかなりせかされてるそうです。・・・・しかし、コンピ、出すぎ。あと、最近TERRE THAEMLITZという人がゲイリーのピアノによるカヴァー・アルバムを出しました。『REPLICAS RUBATO』というやつです。大しておもしろくないです。ジャケも『REPLICAS』のパロディーで、本人は女装してます。この人は、前にも『DIE ROBOTER RUBATO』という、クラフトワークのピアノ・カヴァー集を出してました。・・・次は誰をやるんでしょうか?でも、ピアノは全く弾けないそうで、すべて打ち込みで作ったそうです。あと、この人は細野晴臣&ビル・ラズウェル『Interpieces Organisation』にもリミキサーとして参加してましたね。それはすごく良かったんだけどな。

＜Numaniaの荒特派員＞ただの「ゲイリー・ニューマン語録」というのでは、あまり面白味がないので、他のミュージシャン達による、ゲイリー・ニューマンに関しての発言集みたいなものを集めてみました。

「ロンドンだめだよ。こういう音楽(テクノポップなど)はドイツの方が進んでるよ。ゲイリー・ニューマンがトップのようじゃ、ロンドンのシンセサイザー音楽の状況は寒いよね(笑)。ゲイリーと僕達は何か悪口の言いあいっこをしているようだけど・・・(笑)」
(YMOの音楽はアートかアミューズメントか、という問いに、アミューズメントだね、と答えたあと)
・・・じゃあ、アートをやっているロックってあると思う？
「僕はあんまりないと思う。ゲイリー・ニューマン、みんなバカにするけど(笑)、けっこうアートなのね。青白き少年っぽいところがね。彼の場合は凶暴さがないんだけど、けっこう発明が入ってるよ。そんなところは僕も応援したいの。ただ、ステージなんかは聴いていると、もちろん飽きるけど・・・。２曲くらい聴けばあとは同じだ。僕はジョン・フォックスよりは、思いつき、アート的、というところではゲイリー坊やを買うね(笑)。ジョンはフリーキーじゃないんだ」

「僕が最初にゲイリー・ニューマンの音に接したのは、僕らＰ-モデルにワーナーから声が掛かり遊びに来ませんかというので行ったら、僕らと似たようなのがいるよと聞かされたのね」
「あの人きっとライヴやったらカッコ悪いんじゃないかなと思ってたんだよね。体型が体型だし。ところでアンコールで胸をはだけたのにはちょっとガッカリしたね。あれはマズイよ。あれで急に人間臭く、汗臭くなっちゃったじゃない。それまでは、キチンと計算したスタイルできたのに、その幻想アンドロイドといったキャラクターを、胸をはだけたことによって壊しちゃったじゃない」

・・・いろんなインタビューで、彼(ゲイリー)は、最も影響を受けた人物として君の名前を挙げている。それについて、君はどう思う？
「彼はフェアーだと思うよ。普通、誰も自分の受けた影響などは言いたがらないからね。しかし、僕がこのテの音楽を始めたのは４～５年前なんだけど、多かれ少なかれ、同じころに同じようなアイデアを持ってる人がいたとても全然不思議ではないんだ」

「『リモート・コントロール』でのトッド・ラングレンのプロデュースは、早くうまくまとめているけれど僕としては満足のいくものじゃない。ベーシック・トラックは僕とドラムのプレイリー(Prairie)、ヴィンス(Vince)の３人で作ってとてもシンプルな面を持っていた。今とても気に入っているチューブウェイ・アーミーのような音だったんだ」

「偏見なんて一切なしでショーを見に行ったんだ。その真価を判断するためにね。でも、あれは最悪だったよ。彼は、ニュー・アルバムの中の中くらいのペースのナンバーでスタートした。そのニュー・アルバムは、まだ誰も知らなかったんだけどね。で、それが４分ほど続いた。全体的なペースがまずかったよ。彼は、誰にでも思いつく限りのあらゆることをやった。コスチュームを変えたり、いろんな効果を使ったりね。でも、彼はどうしてそれをやるのか理解できてなくて、ただ無意味にやってたよ」

Gary Numan who is still about 20-years-old is an android who came down to the earth as a missionary of electro music bringing Tubeway Army. He is also a nerd who worship electricity and machinery. He is a great man who sent three albums into top 10 since the Beatles. But, it is quite hard for his diehard funs as there are so many albums to collect. He is still performing energetically. Dramatis is Gary Numan's band without Gary that started as Gary quitted from the live activity. Their singles were released on Rocket Records and Beggars Banquet. Big Noise UK appears to be also a unit by ex members of Gary Numan's support, but their relationship with Dramatis is unknown.

<Jorge Arturi in Argentina> A lot of stars recorded with him like Kajagoogoo's Nick Beggs on stick in "Outland", Oino Palladino on bass in 'Music for Chamaleons' and Japan's Mick Karn on 'She's Got Claws' in "Dance". Marilyn Manson plays an original version of Numan's hit 'Down In The Park' and Manson invited Gary Numan to play live those songs.

<Correspodent Ara known as Numania> I guess that Gary is not liked much by Techno Pop fans in Japan; however, I got addicted to him around '90, and I started to buy everything I find except some trashy best compilation albums. In the U. K., Gary is booming again with tribute albums to him, his appearance on various TV programs, various guest invitations to him. He appeared on the drama "Hunting Venus" as a side act. He was peeing in a restroom. I laughed. On the other days, I bought lots from Gary's Official Webpage. Video, Tour Booklets, his biography - his face is nice. I was amazed to see a picture of Beck, Marilyn Manson, and Gary. In "1998 Yearbook" for the fan club, there is his wedding picture.... Comical-looking face....what will happen to his image.... But, his wife make-up is very showy. I guess that was his first marrige around the age of 40. In his privite life, "Me!! Disconnected From You". He appears to be working on a new album, but Eagle Records is rushing him to release because of major delay (supposed to be released in Feb., '99). But, too many compilation albums. By the way, Terre Thaemlitz released the piano cover album of Gary called "Replicas Rubato". Not very interesting. The cover is a parody of "Replicas" and he is disguising himself as a woman. He released the piano cover album of Kraftwerk. I wonder what's next. I heard he cannot play a piano, and he programmed all. He was a mixer for "Interpieces Organisation" by Haruomi Hosono and Bill Laswell. That was quite good.

"London is no good. This type of music (like Techno Pop) is more advanced in Germany. Sythesizer Music in London is not promising if Gary Numan is at the top. It seems like that Gary and we are speaking ill of each other."

...well is there any Rock that actually does art?
"I think very few. Gary Numan is quite arty while everyone is making fun of him. He is green like a boy. He has no violence, but invention. I want to support that part. But, I will get easily tired of it when I listen to him on the stage. After listening a few, the rest is the same. I personally buy Gary Numan more than John Foxx in terms of insight and art. John is not freaky.

...In many interviews, Gary mentioned your name as a person that influenced him the most. What do you think of that?
"I think he's fair. Normally, people do not want to mention about what influenced them. I started this kind of music 4 - 5 years ago, and it is not surprising at all if somebody had the same idea at the same time."

"Todd Rundgren put things together well in "Remote Control", but I was not satisfied. The basic track made by me, Pairie for drums, Vince had a very simple aspect. It was like Tubeway Army which I like these days."

"I went to his show without bias to judge the true value. But, it was the worst. He started with an average number from his new album. This new album was not known by anyone yet. It continue for 4 minites or so. Overall pace was bad. He did various things which anyone can think of. He changed his costumes and used various effects. But, he seems to have just done them for nothing without understanding why.
