70年にデビューした変な兄弟ポップ・ユニットである。NEW WAVEという言葉がまだ生まれる前から、精神的にNEW WAVEしていた。70年代、スパークスとロキシー・ミュージックは特別な「変な」位置にいた。L.A.出身だが、英国っぽい。79年にはジョルジオ・モロダーのプロデュースの元に『ナンバー１・イン・ヘヴン』を発表し一気にテクノ化する。元Go-Go'sのJane Wiedlinはプロになる前L.A.の非公式スパークス・ファンクラブ会長をしていた。Go-Go'sのファンでもあったスパークスは、Janeとデュエット「Cool Places」と「Lucky Me」をジョルジオ・モロダーのスタジオでレコーディグし、83年にリリースした。
2000年に新作「Balls」をリリースしたスパークスは初来日ライヴ。2001年1月22日に心斎橋クアトロへと、久々の外タレのコンサートへと行きました。

＜荒特派員＞スパークスは、『イントロデューシング』（これなかなか見つからない）と、今のところ一番新しい『プレイジャリズム』以外のオリジナル・アルバム15枚は全部持ってますが、やはりアイランド時代のインパクトが強いですね。'80年中盤のエレポップ時代も好きなんですが、いかんせん「好きな曲は?」 と訊かれるとツライ。パッとしませんでしたが『インテリア・デザイン』の「ソー・インポータント」と「ラヴ・オ・ラマ」は大好きな曲です。ビデオも変で良かった。スパークスみたいな人たちこそ、ビデオ・クリップ集を出すべきだと思いますけどね。トッド・ラングレンがプロデュースした1st『ハーフネルソン』は、実に珍妙なロック盤で、実は一番好きだったりします。

＜無頼庵特派員＞僕、ライヴ行くくせに、SPARKSコンプリートしてないんです。やっぱSPARKSは歌詞わかんないとツラいっす。所有アルバムの感想です。（アルバムのコメント参照。）

This is an weird brother pop unit who debuted in 1970. They were mentally New Wave before the term "New Wave" was born. In 70's, Sparks and Roxy Music were in the special "weird" position. While they are originally from Los Angeles, their sound is more like British. They became Techno by releasing "No. 1 In Heaven" produced by Giorgio Moroder in 1979. Jane Wiedlin, ex-Go-Go's had been President of non-authorized Sparks fan club in L.A. Sparks who were fans of the Go-Go's released "Cool Places" and "Lucky Me" dueting with Jane which were recorded at Giorgio Moroder's studio.
Sparks first conducted lives in Japan after releasing the new album "Balls" in 2000. I went to Shinsaibashi Quatro on Jan. 22, 2001 that is the concert by foreign aritists after a long interval.

<Correspondent Ara> Sparks has the most impact on me during Island days while I have all their original albums except "Introducing" (hard to find) and the latest "Plagiarism". Though I like Electro Pop days in mid-80's, it is hard to tell what I like. The album "Interior Design" was not success, but I like "So Important" and "Love Oh Lamour". The video was weird and good. Sparks is the one who should release the video clip collection. The first album "Halfnelson" produced by Todd Rundgren is really quirky Rock album, and in fact my favorite.

<Correspondent Brian> While I am going to their live, I have not completed their album. It's a bit difficult Sparks unless the lyrics are understood.
