| 23 October 2003 KM01898/TM-MW Dear Satoru Maetani, You are quite right in assuming that Vincent van Gogh intended La Berceuse to be flanked by two Sunflower still lifes, on with a yellow and one with a blue background, both painted in Arles (1888-1889). The Kroller-MullerMuseum only owns a Paris sunflower still life (cat. p. 181-184). The"blue-grounded" still lifes are in museums in Munich and Philadelphia and could not be lent for the exhibition Van Gogh & Gauguin in Chicago and Amsterdam in 2002. Chicago chose to flank their Berceuse with the London and Amsterdam "yellow-grounded" Sunflower still lifes, whereas Amsterdam hung all three "yellow-painted" still lifes next to one antoher. The Tokyo Museum therefore follows Chicago, be it that the London picture is replaced by their own Sunflower. Although it will give an idea of Van Gogh's intentions, it is not exactly what the painter had in mind when he made the small sketch in his letter of 22 May 1889. 親愛なる前谷悟へ Vincent van Goghが意図していたのは、ラ・ベルスーズの両側に、アルル（1888-1889）で描いた黄色の背景とブルーの背景の２枚のひまわりの静物画が並ぶということだとという、貴方が考えていていることは全く正しい。 クレラー=ミュラー美術館、はパリ時代に描いたひまわりの静物画 (cat. P. 181-184) だけを所有します。 ブルーの背景の静物画はミュンヘンとフィラデルフィア美術館にあります。2002年のシカゴとアムステルダムのVan Gogh & Gauguin展では貸し出されませんでした。 シカゴでは、ベルスーズの両側にロンドンとアムセテルダムの黄色の背景のひまわりの静物画を選択し、並べました。一方、アムステルダムでは黄色の背景のひまわりの静物画を全て３枚をそれぞれ次々に並べた。 それ故、東京美術館はシカゴに追随してロンドンの絵の代わりに、彼等自身が所有するひまわりを置いたのだ。 それは、Van Goghの意思であるという憶測を与えるけれども、彼が1889年5月22日（Van Gogh & Gauguin.
